This is individual and collective crunch time: a time of choice, and for taking a leap into something radically new. Are you feeling it too?
Maybe your blinders have been ripped off and you’re seeing things about yourself and others that were there all along but you just couldn’t see until now? Or perhaps your life is falling apart and you’re standing on the edge of the unknown, not yet able to see a new direction? Maybe you’re alternating between feeling excited and a bit scared? Or like me, you’ve found a clear direction and you’re just going for it?
One thing’s for sure, we’re in a radically new economic situation and whether we’re rich or poor, we’re affected by it. Here in New Zealand most everyone I know, whether they’re affluent or seasoned edge dwellers like me, is learning to live with less cash. When push comes to shove necessity sparks creative thinking. We simply have to find new ways of doing things here on Planet Earth.
Although this can be stressful, it’s also a wonderful opportunity for a breakthrough to a new way of living together and sharing the abundance of our beautiful planet and our own spiritual essence.
I’ve been pondering the real meaning of money. We call it currency and a current is something that flows – a river or a source of electricity. We also talk about staying current to mean staying present. In its pure meaning then is money a flow of energy and abundance a state of presence?
We also use the phrase, “what goes around comes around” to capture the understanding that giving and receiving are a flow. When we give unconditionally and with trust our generosity is repaid many times over. But how often do we give wholeheartedly, unconditionally, without expectation or need?
For most of us it’s very challenging to have the radical trust to stay generous, trusting and open hearted when the bills have to be paid and there’s not enough money coming in. The current economic downturn is a worldwide phenomenon with political roots and it’s mostly only the super rich who are getting richer these days. But there is the possibility for all of us to prosper if we can only shift our thinking.
So what is the perfection in this situation?
Well, first of all, for those of us on a journey of awakening, not having so much money strips away old habits which have kept us feeling safe but bound. Habits, whether having a glass of wine at the end of the day to take the edge off your tension, or spending mind numbing hours surfing the net, are comforting by their very nature. We humans are comfort loving creatures and we will use our habits forever until life steals away those cushions. All addictions, whether to food, alcohol, drugs, money, television, shopping, sex, overwork, gambling, or whatever, represent our attempts to comfort ourselves and to compensate for the fact that we are not taking the risks necessary to go for the true fulfillment of our deepest selves. They’re a way of “making do” and “getting by”.
In the West our habitual over consumption and privileged lifestyles, all those things we don’t really need, are extinguishing the life force or currency of the planet. Even when we are right down to the wire we live in absurd luxury compared to the majority of people in the world. So if, like me, you’re seeing this moment as an opportunity for transformation, you’re probably clearing out your “stuff”, sorting and sifting, making hundreds of daily decisions about what you really need. This includes clearing out limiting beliefs and fear based patterns, including poverty consciousness, old trauma, compulsive independence and co-dependency. This is such an opportunity to clear out the last cobwebs of “victim” so that we can all become magnificent creators and co-creators.
Here are three things which we would all do well to let go of:
False pride and compulsive independence, or “I can do it alone”. I’m noticing how, when people don’t have what they perceive to be “enough” they tend to contract and separate and cling on to what they do have. This stops the flow. Try breathing into the contraction and experiment with giving even when you don’t feel like it. Notice whether you are really open to receive – how do you receive a compliment for example or a small gift? Do you really accept it with gratitude, try and push the gift away or think you have to immediately give something back?
The idea that self worth depends on money or any external things. Whether you are a millionaire or don’t have two pennies to rub together we are all part of the divine energy or the currency of life. And when we truly know this everything starts to change. True wealth comes from being who you truly are, and giving who you truly are, not in “getting” anything from the outside.
Making do with “better than nothing”. Have you ever clung to a relationship, job, or living situation, because you were afraid of the void that would open up if you let go? As long as we cling to what is not truly fulfilling, there is no space for fulfillment to enter. What can you let go of today which no longer truly reflects who you are?
We are standing at the doorway to a new era of simple living and co-creativity. The challenges are coming thick and fast: inner emotional life, relationships, business, finance are mirrors and a clearing house in preparation for this next essential phase of human evolution.
